Whether you are Irish or not, everyone celebrates St. Patrick's Day. While your preschooler might not quite understand what this green holiday filled with leprechauns is all about, they are sure to be excited to get in on the fun! These St. Patrick's Day songs do a great job of hitting all the important parts of St. Patrick's Day, so they can give your child a good idea of what is going on. They are set to familiar tunes, so all you and your little one need to do is focus on the words.

Singing songs together is a great way to build a preschooler's vocabulary. Even if they don't know what a word means, your child is singing it in context, which means she's using the word the way it is supposed to be used. Eventually she will figure out the meaning on her own. If you think there is a word she doesn't know, help her out and tell her what it means.

"Do You Know What a Shamrock Is?"

(sung to the tune of "Do You Know the Muffin Man?")

Do you know what a shamrock is?
A shamrock is, a shamrock is?
Do you know what a shamrock is?
A shamrock is a plant!

Do you know were a shamrock grows?
A shamrock grows, a shamrock grows?
Do you know were a shamrock grows?
A shamrock grows in the ground!

Do you know what color a shamrock is?
A shamrock is, a shamrock is?
Do you know what color a shamrock is?
A shamrock is green!

"Patrick is a Leprechaun"

(sung to the tune of "Yankee Doodle Dandy")

Patrick is a leprechaun,
he has a sack of gold!

He hides it in a special place,
between two stumps, I'm told!
I think I saw Patrick out, in the woods at play
He smiled and laughed and winked his eye
And then he ran away!

Don't follow Patrick!
To find his treasure sack
He'll twist and jump and run away
And he never will come back!

"The Eensy Weensy Leprechaun"

(sung to the tune of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider)

An eensy weensy leprechaun
came out for St. Patrick's Day! (hold thumb and pointer finger together to show something is very small)
To look for the gold
that was hidden far away! (hold hand on forehead above eyes, to show that you are looking for something)
Over the rainbow
was where he was told (bring arms together over your head to make a rainbow)
So, with a wink of his green eye (point to eye)
He ran to get the gold! (run in place)

"R-A-I-N-Bow"

(sung to the tune of "B-I-N-G-O")

There was a little leprechaun,
He lived under a rainbow.
R - A - I - N - 'bow'
R - A - I - N - 'bow'
R - A - I - N - 'bow'
He lived under a rainbow.

Repeat verses by eliminating one letter and clapping your hands.

"I'm a Little Leprechaun"

(sung to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot")

I'm a little leprechaun short and stout.
Look at my top hat and hear me shout.
When I get excited, listen to me dear.
St. Patrick's Day is now right here!

"Leprechaun, Leprechaun Where Are You?"

(sung to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")

Leprechaun, Leprechaun, where are you?

I tried to catch you, but away you flew.
I'm going to get you just wait and see!
Then all your gold will belong to me!
Leprechaun, Leprechaun, where are you?
I tried to catch you and away you flew

"I'm a Little Leprechaun!"

(sung to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb")

I'm a little leprechaun, leprechaun, leprechaun!
I'm a little leprechaun, who likes to hide my gold.

I dress in green from head to toe, head to toe, head to toe!
I dress in green from head to toe, I wear green all day long!

You'll never catch me or my gold, not my gold, not my gold!
You'll never catch me or my gold, I hide it much too well!
