The strength of your medical team depends on how much effort you place in training and development. With proper training and development, your medical office staff can reach their maximum potential.

Developing a Policy

Obtain positive results for your organization by developing a policy to strengthen your medical office staff. Be sure your policy includes a continuing education program to make sure all employees are kept up-to-date on office policies, compliance, and job specific requirements.

Ongoing Collaboration

The ongoing collaboration of your medical staff is critical to the successful operations of your medical facility and the delivery of quality treatment to patients. Collaboration among team members who have different perspectives and areas of expertise often results in fresh insights and solutions to problems that rarely get achieved by one health professional working in a silo. Each member of the staff should become aware that because of the professional diversity present on the team, differences of opinion and conflict are not only inevitable but are important for the continued growth of your collaboration -- which is why it is so important to practice and educate on how to deal with these type of issues.

Cross-Training

One area that promises positive results in your strengthening efforts is cross-training staff. Cross-training is the most valuable training tool that an employer can offer for the benefit of the entire organization.

Continuity of service is an example of one of the benefits cross-training your staff can offer. The quality of care your patients receive should not be less than excellent due to one or two absent employees.

Cross-training also improves morale. Employees feel they are a valuable asset to the organization when they are given the opportunity to expand their skills or knowledge.

Assign Specific Skills

The first step in coordination is to determine which team members will be responsible for a particular patient problem. Because the focus of the team should be on the needs of the patient, patient care goals determine the makeup of your team and the responsibilities each team member has to address these patient problems. It is crucial to coordinate with the members of the patient family as partners on this team to ensure they are educated on the patient's help and how to best address ongoing care. Sharing the care of an individual patient will help give them a 360-degree approach to their treatment and overall health care experience.

Effective Communication

Effective communication is needed to facilitate coordinated care at all times. An ideal communication system would include a well-designed digital filing system, regularly scheduled meetings to discuss patient care issues around the clock and a mechanism for communicating with external systems.

Removing Unproductive Employees

Another way to strengthen the medical office staff is by reassigning or removing unproductive employees. The team is only as strong as it's weakest link. Unproductive employees can compromise quality of care, and lower employee morale.

This does not necessarily mean the employee needs to be terminated. Evaluate your unproductive employees to find out their strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes employees are placed in a mismatched position or haven't been properly trained.
