Pomegranate peel extract is a natural substance sold in dietary supplement form. Sourced from the peel of the pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum), it's often touted as a top source of antioxidants (including vitamin C). Use of dietary supplements containing pomegranate peel extract is said to provide a wide range of health benefits, including improvements in heart health.

Research shows that pomegranate peel extract is high in polyphenols (a class of compounds with antioxidant effects).

Pomegranate peel extract has also been found to contain ellagitannins, which are compounds known to reduce inflammation).

Uses for Pomegranate Peel Extract

In alternative medicine, pomegranate peel extract is said to help treat and/or prevent the following health problems:

In addition, pomegranate peel is thought to promote detox, protect against heart disease, fight cancer, shield your skin from sun damage, and offer anti-aging benefits.

Benefits of Pomegranate Peel Extract

A number of studies have shown that compounds in pomegranate peel extract may help fight disease by reducing oxidative stress. However, there's currently a lack of clinical trials testing the health effects of dietary supplements containing pomegranate peel extract.

Still, some preliminary research suggests that pomegranate peel extract holds promise in the treatment of certain health conditions.

Here's a look at several findings from the available research on the potential health benefits of pomegranate peel extract:

1)  High Cholesterol

Several animal-based studies have shown that pomegranate peel extract may help lower cholesterol levels. In a study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2014, for instance, tests on rats placed on a high-fat demonstrated that treatment with pomegranate peel extract led to a significant decrease in the animals' total cholesterol.

What's more, pomegranate peel extract appeared to protect the rats from liver damage.

A mouse-based study published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2013 also found that pomegranate peel extract may help keep cholesterol in check. Another key finding from the study: pomegranate peel extract may help boost health by promoting the growth of probiotic bacteria in the gut.

2)  Diabetes

Pomegranate peel extract may help control diabetes, according to a mouse-based study published in the journal Biofactors in 2007. The study found that polyphenols in pomegranate peel extract may help regulate blood sugar levels, as well as improve insulin levels.

3)  Cancer

There's some evidence that pomegranate peel extract may have anti-cancer benefits. In a rat-based study published in Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, for instance, an experiment on rats showed that pomegranate peel extract may inhibit the development of colon cancer.

Furthermore, a preliminary study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in 2011 shows that pomegranate peel extract may help combat breast cancer.

In their research on human breast cancer cells, the study's authors observed that pomegranate peel extract may help thwart the growth and spread of breast cancer partly by inducing apoptosis (a type of programmed cell death essential for stopping the proliferation of cancer cells).

Due to the lack of clinical trial testing the effects of dietary supplements containing pomegranate peel extract, little is known about the safety of long-term or regular use of such supplements. If you're considering the use of dietary supplements containing pomegranate peel extract, consult your physician prior to starting your supplement regimen.

Where to Find It

Dietary supplements containing pomegranate peel extract are sold in many stores specializing in natural products, including natural-foods stores. You can also purchase pomegranate peel extract online.

Using Pomegranate Peel Extract for Health

Due to the limited research, it's too soon to recommend pomegranate peel extract as a treatment for any condition. It's also important to note that self-treating a condition and avoiding or delaying standard care may have serious consequences. If you're considering using it, make sure to consult your physician first.
