The IBS Network, formerly known as The Gut Trust, is a United Kingdom-based charity devoted to improving quality of life for people who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The efforts of this amazing organization include providing resources for patients and health professionals, maintaining at least two active websites, and hosting live events, all with a focus on education, advocacy and support for people who have IBS.

Benefits of Membership

In order to access most of the resources of The IBS Network, you need to become a member. Membership is listed on the website as £24 a year. Your membership fee entitles you to:

  • Medical advice from a gastroenterologist via email
  • Nutritional advice from a dietitian via email
  • Access to a Helpline where during certain times of the week you can speak directly with a nurse
  • Subscription to the quarterly Gut Reaction magazine
  • A "Can't Wait" card to be used for access to public restrooms (available with multiple translations)
  • Access to an online Symptom Tracker
  • Support for setting up a local support group

Free Resources

In addition to all the resources offered to membership, The IBS Network website offers basic information on IBS, research updates, free recipes and a cooking video. The IBS Network also sponsors a community forum on HealthUnlocked.

The Self Care Plan

The IBS Network manages a spin-off site called The Self-Care Plan.

This site provides educational information on all aspects of IBS. This information is provided in article, video, and audio form. There is a self-care plan for each of the primary IBS symptoms. An extremely nice feature is the inclusion of free "bowel relaxation" audio files that you can listen to whenever you need them.

You don't need to be a member to access these resources, with the exception of the use of the Symptom Tracker.

The IBS Network Sites

The main site offers you links to the other sites, as well as provides you with a place to sign up for membership and a place to donate to the charity. Here is the link to the main homepage:

My Bottom Line

I have loved this charity since I first learned about its existence. It is just amazing, the number of resources that this charity has pulled together. I really admire the dedication to the cause of IBS - a cause that has long been a neglected one. If you live in the U.K., it is definitely worth your while to check out this organization and consider becoming a member. I would also recommend that you contribute to The IBS Network’s large-scale advocacy efforts by making a donation.
