Seeking inspiration for your baby's first birthday party theme? Look no further than colorful crayons. A crayon birthday party is a unisex theme that's super easy to put together using items you already own, and it's fun for guests of all ages.

Crayon Birthday Party Invitations

Memorable first birthday parties begin with fun invitations. There are so many different ways to create crayon birthday party invites, even if you don't consider yourself particularly crafty.

Crayon clip art is readily available online. About Scrapbooking has a free pattern for crayon paper that you can use to decorate your invitations. You could also follow Chica and Joe's directions to make adorable boxes of crayons that double invitations.

Crayon Birthday Party Decorations

When decorating for a crayon-themed birthday party, you have the freedom to let your creativity run wild. Use balloons and streamers in bright colors found in a box of crayons. Make an easy, DIY centerpiece by filling the bottom of a large, glass vase with crayons and adding a silk flower arrangement to the top.

Many parents like to include pictures as part of the decorations for a first birthday party so guests can see how much baby has changed over the past year. In that case, make crayon frames to display pictures in a way that also follows the party theme.

Crayon Birthday Cakes

There are a few options to consider when selecting the cake for your baby's first birthday.

About Parents has instructions for making a cake that looks like a box of crayons. Wilton has instructions for a cake that looks like a single crayon. However, if you're more into traditional cakes, Martha Stewart has a great recipe for a rainbow cake with a colorful inside that would be perfectly appropriate for a crayon birthday party.

Follow a color-coordinated theme for the party food. If you're going to be serving sandwiches, fruit and vegetables as party snacks, arrange items by color to enhance the crayon theme. Pretty bowls of red strawberries, orange baby carrots, yellow pineapple slices, green celery sticks, blueberries and purple grapes lined up next to tray of deli sandwiches would make for a festive arrangement.

Crayon Birthday Party Activities

In keeping with the arts and crafts theme of a crayon birthday party, you'll want to provide plenty of space for your young guests to get creative. Have guests make something special to take home as a souvenir by purchasing fabric crayons and having them color pictures that can be transferred onto T-shirts or tote bags. Read a story with a crayon theme, like "Harold and the Purple Crayon" or "The Crayon Box that Talked."

Crayon Birthday Party Favors

Since fancy favors aren't expected at a first birthday party, take this as an opportunity to save a little money. Send your little artists home with a new box of crayons and a coloring book made from free coloring pages with a customized cover that says" "Thanks for coming to [Child's Name] Birthday Party!" You could also include a small snack, homemade, candy-dipped pretzel crayons or rainbow colored Goldfish crackers in the goodie bags.
