Thyroid hormone replacement drugs are drugs used to treat hypothyroidism. They help to resolve hypothyroidism by replacing missing hormone that the thyroid gland is unable to produce, or after a gland has been radioactively ablated or surgically removed.

  • Levothyroxine is a synthetic version of the thyroid hormone thyroxine, known as T4. Levothyroxine is sometimes called "l-thyroxine" or "L-T4."
  • Primary brand names of levothyroxine in the U.S. are Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid, and Tirosint. There are also a number of generic levothyroxine drugs made by various companies.

  • Liothyronine is a synthetic version of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine, known as T3.
  • The only brand name liothyronine is the drug Cytomel. There is a generic liothyronine available in the U.S. as well.

  • Natural Desiccated Thyroid -- abbreviated as NDT -- is a prescription medication made from the desiccated (dried) thyroid glands of pigs.
  • NDT is also known as "porcine thyroid," "natural thyroid," and "pig thyroid."
  • FDA-regulated prescription drug, includes natural forms of T4, T3, as well as T1, T2
  • Key brands are Armour Thyroid, owned by Allergan (formerly made by Forest Pharmaceuticals), Nature-throid and WP Thyroid from manufacturer RLC Labs, and a generic in the US (Thyroid NP) made by Acella

    • Compounding pharmacies can compound time-released or regular T3, and create combinations of levothyroxine/natural thyroid, by prescription

    • Thyroid medications that have been discontinued in recent years and are no longer available include Thyrolar (generic name, liotrix, a synthetic T4/T3 combination), and the Levothroid brand of levothyroxine

Antithyroid drugs are used to treat an overactive thyroid - hyperthyroidism.

      • Methimazole, pronounced meth-IM-a-zole and often abbreviated as MMI, is a drug that slows an overactive thyroid.
      • Inhibits the thyroid from using iodine to produce thyroid hormone.
      • Brand name Tapazole (pronounced tap-UH-zole), used to be produced by Jones Pharma and is now made by Pfizer. There is also a generic methimazole available in the United States.
      • Carbimazole -- pronounced car-BIM-a-zole -- metabolizes to methimazole and is known by its brand name NeoMercazole. Carbimazole is typically used in the United Kingdom and Europe.

      • Propylthiouracil, a drug that slows an overactive thyroid, is pronounced proe-pill-thye-oh-YOOR-a-sill), and abbreviated as PTU.
      • PTU inhibits the thyroid from using iodine to produce thyroid hormone, and inhibits T4-to-T3 conversion. This drug has a shorter half-life than MMI, requires multiple daily dosage, and has more side effects.
      • PTU is only available in generic form.
      • Less frequently used, due to risks of liver damage

Recombinant TSH is used for thyroid cancer patients prior to scans for recurrence, to allow for accurate scanning and without having to experience the side effects of hypothyroidism.

      • Also known as recombinant TSH
      • Only brand name: Thyrogen, from Genzyme. No generic available.
      • Given by injection, for thyroid cancer patients preparing to have radioactive iodine after surgery, and preparing for scan to assess recurrence or leftover cancer cells
