The Bottom Line

When I was young, I was naive to the fact that by scrubbing my teeth with my toothbrush I was actually harming the delicate gum tissue, and exposing the dentin layer of my tooth, causing sensitivity. I don't normally use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth because I find the paste really doesn't help with my sensitivity, and most are so overpriced I opt for a toothpaste that is a fraction of the price.

I really enjoyed the subtle flavor of the toothpaste. After using it for only one week, I noticed that I was able to comfortably drink a glass of ice water without stopping to take long breaks in between sips.

Guide Review - Review of Tom's of Maine Maximum Strength Sensitive Toothpaste

I know what you're thinking - there are already several brands of toothpaste for sensitive teeth, what makes Tom's of Maine any different from the rest?

Before I tell you about Tom's of Maine Maximum Strength Sensitive Toothpaste, I would like to familiarize you with the Tom's of Maine company.

Tom and Kate Chappell began Tom's of Maine in 1970. With a $5,000 loan, the couple set out to create natural personal care products that were Eco-friendly. Over the years, Tom's of Maine has created their products using natural ingredients - derivatives from plants and minerals. Along with using natural ingredients, Tom's of Maine refuses to test their products on animals, in fact, according to the product fact sheet I received with my sample of Tom's of Maine toothpaste, their company launched a landmark case against the American Dental Association against the use of animal testing for oral care products. Going one step further, Tom's of Maine uses fully recyclable, Eco-friendly packaging and their manufacturing practices are environmentally friendly.

I suffer from minor tooth sensitivity, so I wanted to see how well this toothpaste really works.

My brother-in-law has suffered from extremely sensitive teeth, also known as hypersensitivity since he was a child. His teeth cause him painful bouts of sensitivity on a daily basis. His dentist recommended that he try using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, with no prevail. If Tom's of Maine Maximum Strength Toothpaste reduced his sensitivity it would be a miracle.

Rather than paraphrase my brother-in-law's experience with Tom's of Maine, I will let you read his words for yourself.

"I have always been a strong proponent that its got to hurt if it is to heal, or in the context of medicine, it has to taste bad if its going to be effective! When I used this toothpaste for the first time I immediately had a bias towards its effectiveness. I was hoping it would have bad taste; however the taste is quit neutral. And after continued use it became pleasant.

I have tried all the brand name sensitivity toothpastes out there and haven't been impressed enough to continue to use one particular brand, so the probability that this sensitivity toothpaste would be successful was slim. I wasn't expecting any miracles when using this toothpaste, and I didn't really experience any miracles. I haven't felt much of a difference regarding my tooth sensitivity and the extreme temperatures in my mouth. I still can't chew or bite ice cream, however I have noticed a difference with mediocre temperatures, like drinking something cold. My teeth seem to be a little more resilient and less affected to these temperatures than before! It is a noticeable difference.

This toothpaste has lasted longer than any of the other ones. It is recommended on the tube not to exceed use beyond 4 weeks straight, without then consulting a dentist. So I used it for the 4 weeks and now I alternate my brushing between that and regular toothpaste"
