Every year the Social Security Administration releases information on the top baby names. Most parents take interest in these lists, either to help name the baby they are expecting, or to find out how their own baby's name ranked. Some parents use them to try to avoid choosing a name that's too popular.

When it comes to naming your baby, you can't make a "wrong" decision—some names are popular by year and some names will fluctuate in popularity, so choose a name that is meaningful to you and your family.

If you need ideas for baby names, however, it can be helpful to see some of the most popular baby names in the Unites States.

Top Baby Names of 2016

And although the year isn't quite over, a survey of over 400,000 parents done by BabyCenter revealed the top baby names of 2016. While the list changes slightly over the years, the baby name Sophia has held strong, cinching the top girl name since 2010, while Jackson is still #1 after taking the lead in 2013.

The baby name Sophia has been popular for a long time and it has an interesting history. Sophia actually derives from the Greek word for wisdom and has different spellings, including Sofia and Sophie, which are popular in both the U.S. and Europe. Sophia is one of those classic-yet-modem names that parents love choosing these days, because it's a nod to the past while also looking towards the present. It's the perfect mix of feminine and strength.

There are also many popular celebrities who have been named Sophia, or a variation of it, such as Sophia Loren.

As for Jackson, it's a popular boy's name that has held the lead for three years running, but it may soon be overshadowed by some of the other popular baby names for boys, such as runner-ups Aiden and Lucas.

Jackson is said to be of Scottish origin, meaning "God has been gracious" or "God has shown favor." It's also said to be linked to the name "John" or "Jacques," a variation of the American spin on Jack. Historically, a boy whose father was named Jack or Jacques might have had the name "Jackson," literally meaning, "son of Jack." One of the most famous variations of the name Jackson is the seventh President, Andrew Jackson, whose name had Irish origins.
