My Favorite Movies About Twins

Twins and multiples have long been a source of fascination and intrigue. No doubt about it, their complex and unique relationship is always fodder for an interesting story! Here's a collection of movies featuring twins or other multiples that will be enjoyed by families with twins-- or by anyone interested in multiple birth.

The Parent Trap

The remake of the 1961 classic is as charming as its predecessor. Lindy Lohan plays the dual roles of twins separated at birth, who meet up at summer camp and decide to switch roles in an effort to bring together their divorced parents. The happy-ever-after ending is typically Disney, but the story is sweet and genuine. (1998, Rated PG-13.)

Twins starring Schwarzenegger and DeVito

Starring Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger, this very funny comedy tells the story of two genetic twins who couldn't be more dissimilar. When the long-lost brothers are reunited and proceed on an adventure to find their mother, their relationship is an entertaining study of the nature vs. nurture theory. (1988, Rated PG.)

Rock-A-Bye Baby movie starring Jerry Lewis

This slapstick comedy is one of the few movies featuring triplets. When a movie star needs a babysitter for her three babies, Jerry Lewis takes the job with hilarious results. This classic is silly fun for the whole family. (1958, Not Rated.)

Legally Blondes

This spin-off of the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon introduces twin characters in the form of her British cousins. It stars real-life twins Milly and Becky Rosso, who starred in the Disney Channel series, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. If you are familiar with the plot of the original movie, you can expect it times two in this movie, but without the charm of Reese. (2009, Rated PG.)

Jack and Jill

Adam Sandler plays both he and she in this movie about twin siblings. The premise of the movie is flawed from the start by identifying the characters as identical twins. (Boy/girl identical twins? Really?)  If you find Adam Sandler's style of humor entertaining, you'll enjoy this double dose of him. (2011, Rated PG.)

Big Business

In the female version of Twins, Bette Middler and Lily Tomlin play two sets of twins who were separated at birth. A double dose of Bette and Lily? Yes, please. Silly comedy set at the Plaza hotel in New York City with plenty of hilarity. (1988, Rated PG.)

Twinsters movie

The true story of two sisters who were separated at birth, but reunited after discovering each other on social media. Their amazing story, the palpable excitement as they prepare to meet, and the sweet development of their relationship are well worth watching. If you enjoy tales about twins separated at birth, check out these stories. (2015, Unrated.)

The Skeleton Twins

Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader were hilarious together on Saturday Night Live. In The Skeleton Twins, they play fraternal twins who were estranged but reunite after a suicide attempt. With these stars, you might expect some laughs, but The Skeleton Twins is not a light-hearted movie. (2014, Rated R.)

It Takes Two (and other Olsen twin movies)

No movie list could be complete without a movie featuring Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. I'll admit, I'm a fan of the movies that did in the late 1990's - my twin daughters watched them avidly! It's hard to single out one particular favorite among the many we enjoyed, but this one stands out with the inclusion of grown-up actors, Steve Guttenberg and Kirstie Alley. The plot is a pure rip-off of The Parent Trap, but note that the Olsen twins predated Disney's Lindsey Lohan version. (1995, Rated PG.) Shop for It Takes Two at
