Top Waterproof Jackets

When you walk in a rainy climate, a waterproof breathable jacket is essential. What should you look for in a jacket? As the weather turns colder, you will want to wear an insulating layer underneath it rather than change jackets, so you may want a roomier jacket to accommodate layering. You may want a waterproof jacket that will layer over your pack and move well enough so you can walk fast. The hood must adjust so you can see out from under it. Pockets should store things securely and keep them dry. Some prefer a longer jacket to keep more rain off of their pants.

These waterproof, breathable rain jackets are inexpensive. They come in both men's and women's styles. Walkers in the rainy Northwest have taken to them in droves. The men's version is especially good for layering over a Camelbak hydration pack, as it has more room in the torso. It has a chest pocket for your phone or other items, two zippered hand pockets and a large interior drop-in pocket. The sleeves close with a hoop and loop tab. You can adjust the fit with a drawstring at the bottom. This jacket is excellent for layering, providing a windproof and waterproof lightweight outer layer. It is easy to pack away if the showers pass by.

This lightweight waterproof breathable rain jacket packs up small enough to fit into a water bottle and it packs into an integrated pack pocket. The long front pockets can be used for warming hands or ventilation, and it has pit zips for further ventilation. It has a roll-up hood and lined chin guard. It's a good basic waterproof jacket for layering. The PreCip comes in over a dozen different colors and in sizes from XS to XXL.

The men's version of the PreCip jacket has a boxier fit than the women's jacket but otherwise has the same great features and comes in a variety of colors. It comes in a Tall version and an XXXL version as well.

This is a very light weight performance rain jacket and it can be found at Costco Wholesale stores for a ridiculously low price. But as with the Paradox jacket (which was also sold at Costco), it gives you amazing value for the money. The fabric is lighter and softer than the Paradox but it is waterproof and seam sealed. The men's version has two lined hand pockets and a breast pocket, perfect for your mobile phone. The women's version lacks the breast pocket and has a shorter and slimmer design. Inside, there are deep interior pockets in front where you can carry even more essentials and keep them dry. They come in women's sizes Small to XL and men's sizes Medium to XXL. The men's jacket works well as a unisex design if you prefer the breast pocket and roomier fit.

The Rain Shield O2 yellow rain suit is a walking essential for dreary, rainy days. While it seems like a call-back to stiff, rubbery slickers, it actually is supple, scentless, and breathable. It can keep you dry through cloudbursts. The water beads up and rolls off without soaking into the fabric. But it also allows sweat to escape from the inside.

The Venture is a classic. It's waterproof, windproof, and breathable, with two long front pockets to use to warm hands, stow gear, or vent. It also has pit zips. The shirttail hem provides rear coverage while letting you get full hip motion. It comes in both men's and women's versions.

This packable waterproof jacket is meant for active sports like walking and hiking. You can stuff it into its self-stuff pocket. But it is more than minimalist. It has a two-way adjustable hood with laminated visor. The front zipper is protected by storm flaps inside and outside. It has two zippered hand pockets to keep your small essentials dry. It comes in both a men's and a women's version.

This waterproof jacket is built for speed.  I like the inside media pocket to keep your electronics dry, and two zippered side pockets. You can stash the hood. It has a back vent to enhance breathability. The price is excellent for a jacket of this quality.
