A true gem in the world of IBS resources is the UNC Center for Functional GI & Motility Disorders. The center is part of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Its founders and current co-directors are two of the world's top IBS experts, Douglas A. Drossman, MD and William E. Whitehead, Ph.D.

What It Offers:

The scope of activities within the center are amazingly impressive:

  • Patient Care: Treatment is available to individuals who suffer from functional GI disorders through a multi-disciplinary team and according to a biopsychosocial approach.
  • Research Studies: Research into the causes and treatment of GI disorders is ongoing. If you are interested in serving as a subject, click here.
  • Training: Training occurs on site as well as through the provision of educational materials and continuing education for health professionals.
  • Patient Education: The center offers public education through many modalities: written materials, workshops, and online activities.

The UNC Center is an impressive and much-needed IBS resource. One can only wish that were more places that offered the breadth and quality of services that this center offers.
