5 Ways to Use Poor Quality Photos in Your Baby Scrapbook Album

Tips for Coping with Poor Picture Quality

If you're like most new parents, you probably don't snap perfect pictures on a regular basis. Maybe you sometimes forget to use the flash on your camera or check to make sure your photo subject is actually in the frame. Maybe you have a habit of getting so excited by your adorable baby's newest accomplishment that you can't keep your hands steady long enough to snap a clear picture.

Since you can't recreate special moments like your baby rolling over or trying solid food for the first time, it's a good idea to keep in mind some techniques for making the most of poor quality photos.

Even if your pictures aren't perfect, there are still many ways you can include them in your baby scrapbook layout.

Convert Low Quality Photos to Black and White

Converting photos to black and white is one easy way to help correct problems with exposure or poor color. This lends your photos more of an elegant and sophisticated appearance, which can be a nice change from the traditional baby scrapbook layout. Using black and white photos will also give you a chance to try out some of your favorite patterned papers and embellishments without worrying about whether the colors clash with your baby pictures.

Try Strategic Cropping for Poor Quality Photos

Strategic cropping can sometimes be useful in enhancing a poor quality photo that you want to include on your baby scrapbook page. For example, if you have a picture of your husband holding your baby, you can crop out your husband if his eyes are closed.

On a similar note, you can enhance bad quality photos from Christmas morning by cropping out some of the wrapping paper, bows, and excess background clutter.

Cover Trouble Spots with Embellishments

If you don't want to crop your photo, try using embellishments to help camouflage trouble spots. For example, footprint stickers or phrase embellishments could be used to cover up the glare from your flash or the foot of someone who accidentally wondered into the frame as you were snapping pictures of your baby walking for the first time.

Experiment with Digital Filters on Bad Quality Pictures

The filters in an image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop Elements can be used to create special effects that can enhance your photos. You can turn a photo into a charcoal sketch or make it look like a watercolor painting. Lighting effects can also be used to highlight selected portions of the photo. Feel free to experiment in order to determine what works best for a particular picture, but always remember to save a copy of the original image in a safe location in case you decide you don't like the changes you've made.

Focus on Your Baby Scrapbook Page Journaling

Typically, photos are the focus of a baby scrapbook page. When you have low quality photos with special sentimental meaning, however, you may want to take a different approach. If you print your journaling on vellum and layer it over the photo, you'll put the emphasis on your story and help detract attention from bad quality pictures. You could also try enlarging the photo and reducing the opacity in order to create customized patterned paper for your baby scrapbook album.
