Here is an idea for a washi tape craft that's fun and easy to do with kids: beautiful butterflies in all sorts of bright and cheery colors and patterns. (Washi tape is decorative Japanese masking tape. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns, and can be used to decorate or add gorgeous or whimsical details to everything from gift wrap, cards, cups, pencils, and more. Besides being fun for kids to use, washi tape is also relatively inexpensive (about $3.50 a roll).

You and your kids will love working with these lovely tapes, and will enjoy making several butterflies to add to cards, picture frames, spring wreaths, or anything else you can think of. All you need to make this simple craft is some washi tape, paper, pencil, and scissors. (If you prefer, you can also use a paper punch to create butterflies, but hand-drawn butterflies are just as cute.) It's simple, beautiful and fun--the perfect spring craft for kids!

2
Assemble the materials you will need to make your butterflies.

  • To begin making your washi tape butterflies, assemble the materials you will need. They are:

  • plain white paper (card stock or regular drawing or printer paper, depending on the thickness you desire for your butterflies).
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • washi tape* in a variety of colorful patterns
  • butterfly shape punch (optional)

*Note: You can find single rolls or packs of washi tape in stationery and craft stores or through online stores like Cutetape.com.

3
Draw a half of a butterfly shape on the fold of a piece of white paper.

Take a piece of plain white paper and fold a seam about 2 inches long. Draw a half of a butterfly shape. (You may want t make a few to see which ones are the closest to the shape you want).

Cut out the butterfly and use it as a template to draw more butterfly halves. Do not cut those out--these will be decorated with washi tape.

4
Put washi tape strips on the butterflies.

Open up the fold so that you have the butterflies halves in a column. Take your washi tape and put a strip on the butterflies. (Make sure you put enough washi tape to cover the half of the butterfly that is not drawn in pencil so that when you fold the paper back up again to cut out your butterfly shapes, both sides will have washi tape on them.)

5
Continue putting washi tape on the other butterflies.

Put more strips of washi tape on the other butterflies.

6
Cut out the butterflies you have decorated with washi tape.

Fold your paper again along the seam so that only the half of the butterfly with the hand-drawn line is visible. Cut along the lines to make your butterflies.

7
If you are using a paper punch, make your butterflies first.

If you are using a paper punch to create the butterflies for the washi tape butterflies craft, punch out the butterfly shapes first.

8
Put washi tape on the butterfly shapes and then cut them out.

To make washi tape butterflies using this method, put tape on the butterfly shapes. (The tape may stick to your work surface--your table or paper--but just worry about getting the patter on the butterfly the way you want it. The beauty of washi tape is that it can be easily removed from many surfaces.)

Now, pick up your butterfly and turn it over. Cut out your shape.

9
Cut out your washi tape butterflies and place them where you want!
