What Are the Symptoms of Blepharitis?

The most common signs of blepharitis include watery, itchy, and irritated/red eyes. If you have blepharitis, your symptoms are probably most noticeable upon awakening in the morning. Since blinking your eyes helps to wash away some of the irritating secretions that cause your symptoms, keeping your eyes closed during sleep can make them more noticeable.

Other symptoms of blepharitis include:

  • Itchy eyelids
  • Flaking skin around the eyes
  • Crusted eyelashes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Abnormal growth of eyelashes
  • Loss of eyelashes

Many of the symptoms of blepharitis mimic those of dry eye syndrome. Because the two conditions can occur at the same time, it is important to receive a thorough diagnosis from your health care provider.
