Disruption in the L5 nerve root typically affects the foot, primarily the big toe. Issues in the S1 nerve root affects the other toes, increasing one’s weakness in their foot and making it difficult for them to stand with their feet flexed one way or the other.

Epidural steroid injections are a popular treatment for patients who have sciatica symptoms. These epidurals decrease inflammation around the sciatic nerve which may be aggravating the pain. However, this technique is temporary and typically most-successful for acute sciatic symptoms.
