Originally an Old Irish name, Aiden has been one of the most popular boys' names for about the past decade or so. It cracked the Top 10 most popular names in 2010 and has hovered in the top 20 since. The name has spawned other variations and spellings, and has even outpaced the traditional Irish spelling of Aidan.

The root of the name is from the name of the Irish sun god Aodh, the bringer of fire.

There's also the seventh-century saint Aidan of Lindisfarne, a missionary who spread Christianity across Ireland. The Aidan of Irish myth was the twin brother of Fionnuala and son of Lir, one of the Tuatha de Danann. Several other characters from Irish mythology bore derivatives of Aidan/Aiden.

Although now primarily used as a boy's name, Aiden also has history of being used as a girl's name as well.

Formerly common only in Ireland and Scotland, Aiden has become popular in the U.S., England and Canada, with the "e" as the fourth letter (even though the traditional Irish spelling is "Aidan").

Popularity of Aiden

Its popularity is also reflected in the occurrence of similar-sounding names such as Braden, Caden, Hayden, and Jayden.

Aiden did not start appearing on the Social Security Administration's name charts until 1995, though Aidan, considered the traditional spelling, made its first appearance on name charts in 1990.

The compiled list of popular baby names of 2000 to 009, Aiden ranked at position 7 for that decade.

In 2010, it ranked ninth on U.S. charts. It's also spawned a number of similar-sounding variants, like Brayden, Hayden and Jaden or Jayden. But while Aiden is a popular name, it's slid down the charts somewhat in recent years, so parents looking for a name that's a little less-used might find it a good option.

Middle Names for Aiden

Given its strong Irish roots, the names that match best with Aidan tend to bet traditional-sounding names of Irish origin. For instance, James, Joseph, John, Michael, Patrick, or Thomas are just a few middle names that flow nicely with Aiden.

What To Name Aiden's Brother or Sister

While traditional Irish names are most likely candidates for Aiden's siblings, names that start with "A" would be cute pairs, too. For a sister, traditional Irish names such as Maeve, Siobhan and Eileen are nice matches, along with the alliterative Addison, Alexis or Avery.

For Aiden's brother, the Irish names Connor, Declan or Liam are fine choices, as are Andrew, Austin and Alexander, for parents looking for another "A" baby.
