Black Eyed Peas singer, songwriter, and producer, will.i.am, has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). "I have ADHD. I'll admit it," he shares in an interview with the Daily Mirror, a British tabloid newspaper.

Why ADHD Is a Plus for a Creative Musician

"I've got all this stuff in my head at the same time as I'm doing stuff and I don't know how to stop or slow down. But it's all good because I know how to control it." Music has been a major force in will.i.am's life and a factor in channeling ADHD in successful ways.

He attributes much of his creativity to this inability to stop thinking and his constant flow of thoughts.

"For every obstacle there's some type of solution. So if you have ADHD it's your passion point," says will.i.am. "One thing I learned about ADHD is that it's hard to keep your attention and you can't sit still and you're always moving and thinking about a whole bunch of things. But those traits work well for me in studios and in meetings about creative ideas."

Through his music, will.i.am has found a place for his ADHD. "If you listen to the songs I write, they are the most ADHD songs ever," he explains. "They have five hooks in one and it all happens in three minutes. I figured out a way of working with it."

Finding a good fit career-wise has been important. "If I was stuck at a different job I'd be horrible and wouldn't survive," he says. "Music is my therapy and my straitjacket. Music keeps me sane and keeps my mind on something.

It's fragile up there."

Music "Brings Control to My Thoughts"

Music has been an essential path for his management of ADHD symptoms. "Music brings control to my thoughts," he explains. "It's not escape - it's just order. I'm making order out of a disorder."

Through his music will.i.am has found a positive way to focus his thoughts and manage his ADHD.

In addition, music has also brought him great joy and happiness.

In the early 1990s will.i.am (birth name William James Adams Jr.) formed the hip-hop group Atban Klann with Allan Pineda Lindo. A few years later, the band morphed into the Black Eyed Peas who have sold 31 million albums and 58 million singles worldwide. Will.i.am is a seven-time Grammy Award winner. He is also one of the stars of the BBC hit series, The Voice UK.
